What You’ll Need:

  • Uncooked rice
  • Baking soda
  • Vinegar
  • Water
  • A clear glass or jar
  • Food coloring (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Glass: Fill the clear glass or jar about two-thirds full with water. If you want to add some color to the experiment, mix in a few drops of food coloring.

  2. Add Baking Soda: Add about 1-2 tablespoons of baking soda to the water and stir until it dissolves.

  3. Add Rice: Add a small handful of uncooked rice to the water. The rice will initially sink to the bottom of the glass.

  4. Add Vinegar: Slowly pour vinegar into the glass. Watch as the vinegar reacts with the baking soda, creating bubbles of carbon dioxide gas that attach to the rice grains, causing them to rise and "dance" in the water.

  5. Observe the Dance: As the gas bubbles reach the surface, they pop, and the rice grains sink back down. This process will continue for several minutes, creating a fascinating dance of rice grains.

  6. Discuss the Science: Explain to your child that the baking soda (a base) reacts with the vinegar (an acid) to produce carbon dioxide gas. This gas forms bubbles that attach to the rice, making it float. When the bubbles pop, the rice sinks again, creating the dancing effect.
